Denmark's representative office opens in Tripoli

Minister of Foreign Affairs has arrived in Libya for talks with representatives of the Libyan transition government and the Interim National Transition Council (NTC), where Denmark's support for Libya's transition to democracy, human rights, regional security and the ‘stability and development of relations between the two countries will be high on the agenda.

The Minister, who will also officially open Denmark’s new representative office on the top floor of a Tripoli hotel, called his visit a ‘proud moment’.

“The Arab Spring is perhaps the most important foreign policy development of our time,” he said. “For Libya, it meant a break with 42 years of Gaddafi, when democracy and fundamental human rights were ignored. Libya now has to be built up from scratch as a completely new country, an almost overwhelming challenge, and that’s why I look forward to hearing about their expectations for the democratic process and the liberty and freedoms that it provides.”
