Hundreds of thousands of people in this country can't pay their bills - and it isn't just those at the bottom of the social scale.
A new Financial Supervisory Authority (FSA) report shows that over one in four, around 28 per cent, found themselves struggling with debt in 2011, twice as many as just two years ago. At the same time, 18 per cent were forced to borrow money at exorbitant interest rates to pay bills. Between January 2011 to January 2012, the collective amount owed by those registered by the notorious debtors' agency, Experian, rose from DKK11.6bn to DKK13.5bn.
FSA spokesman Kim Bach said rising unemployment and the struggling housing market were a major factor but the debt problem was now affecting everybody, not just the jobless and those who live in depressed region of the country.
