Denmark opens up Schengen

Danish EU Presidency will lay out the welcome mat for Bulgaria, Romania

The Danish EU Presidency is backing Bulgaria and Rumania's bid to join the Schengen Area.

Minister of Justice Morten Bødskov said it's an issue should be dealt with during Denmark’s Presidency after Finland softened its stance on the two countries' accession that it vetoed together with the Netherlands in September.

European Union President Herman Van Rompuy has previously stated that Bulgaria and Romania live up to the conditions to join the Schengen passport-free travel zone and he will propose talks at the EU summit in March.

Denmark announced today it will be sending emergency aid to Bulgaria, in the form of heated tents, blankets etc. where at least eight people have died after a dam collapsed, Tuesday.
